What is Nitrox?

Enriched Air Nitrox, written EANx, is a breathing gas containing more oxygen and less nitrogen than normal air. Air contains about 21% oxygen; common recreational Nitrox blends contain 32% or 36% oxygen.

Because your body takes on less nitrogen, your dive computer can often give you a longer no-decompression limit. Nitrox is especially useful for repetitive dives, liveaboard-style schedules and several days of diving in a row.

After three dives, the boat ride home can feel very different with Nitrox. Many divers simply feel fresher and more awake at the end of the day. Every diver is different, but it is one reason Nitrox is so popular for repetitive diving.

Does Nitrox let me dive deeper?

No. The additional oxygen creates a maximum operating depth. Nitrox is generally used to gain time within its safe depth range.

Will I use less gas?

No. Your breathing rate and cylinder volume determine how long the gas lasts. Nitrox mainly changes nitrogen exposure and oxygen limits.

Do I have to analyse the cylinder myself?

Yes. A Nitrox diver should personally verify the oxygen percentage, confirm the MOD, check the label and set the dive computer before diving.
